The Mirror

I see the man's reflection;
His disappointed gaze inspects his foe
And finds me lacking
And undeserving.

He knows who I am.
(Loving father,
Doting husband,
Humble,
Devout,
Fueled by passion in all things.)

He knows who I was.
(Insolent,
Insipid,
Forlorn,
Alone,
Misunderstood by every creature breathing.)

He doubts who I'll become.
(Successful,
Loved,
Respected,
Approved,
Alive, but for the grace of God.)

He knows too much,
Sees not far,
Risks too little,
Forgives not enough.

He's the only man I've ever hated.
